3DS Homebrew Apps

3ds-homebrew-channel.jpg

We've been covering 3DS homebrew games and emulators for years, and in going through a lot of our articles and updates, we realized that we've left a bit of an information hole when it comes to actual apps that have come out for the Nintendo 3DS homebrew scene.

While games are great, there have been some truly amazing 3DS homebrew apps that have been released that bring some new functionality and enhanced features to our R4 3DS and 3DS XL systems.  Our hope today is to lost out top 3 favorite 3DS apps that have come out from the homebrew developers that are out there making some amazing freeware applications.

Without further delay, here are 3 apps that you MUST download today for your R4 3DS Card.  These 3DS Homebrew apps will give you a new appreciation both for your 3DS and for your R4 homebrew card.  Best of all, as with all homebrew, they are completely free!

1. DSx86 - The Dos Emulator for the Nintendo 3DS

While this doesn't fall in to the application category per se, we list it here because rather than being a game, it is an app that lets you enjoy and play classic games from the days when DOS ruled our PC screens.  DSx86 is a full fledged DOS emulator for the 3DS.  We list it here as an application because it actually allows you to run classic DOS apps on your Nintendo DS, DSi and Nintendo 3DS system.  And there were lots of cool and neat applications for DOS that some of us may want to go back to and use, even if just for nostalgia's sake.  Mind you, there were plenty of great old DOS games as well, that can be emulated and played on your Nintendo 3DS systems now, thanks to DSx86

Check out Prince Of Persia baing played using DSx86.

2. JabberDS

We've all gotten very used to instant messaging, but it remains something that isn't easily possible on the Nintendo 3DS or 3DS XL systems.  Not with anything other than the built in Picto Chat (which lets you communicate with others in the same house / same network) and Swap Note, which has lost some of it's functionality as of late.  And that's where Jabber comes in.  Jabber is a protocol, more than an instant messaging client, but in this case the two are combined.  .

The XMPP (which is what jabber uses) protocol is used by Google in their Google Talk, and is supported by Cisco and various other large IM software publishers.  JabberDS brings real instant messaging to your Nintendo 3DS system, allowing you to chat with anyone else using JabberDS, or a compatible IM program, world wide.  With JabberDS you bring REAL instant messaging to your 3DS and 3DS XL systems.

3. FlickBook

FlickBook is actually a very well designed Animation application for the Nintendo 3DS, and one of the only 3DS homebrew apps (animation apps) that lets you convert your frames of drawings in to AVI files, which can then be shared with any PC or MAC user, and even uploaded to Youtube to share with the world.  The reason that we love this apps is in it's ability to copy / paste drawings from one frame to another.  This way you can do your drawing, copy it, make the changes you want to see in the next frame, and keep working.  This speeds up the time it takes to make movement and a full fledged animated movie.

This is a must have app for the artistically inclined, and even for those of us that can't day the same... but like animation and want to mess around with it in order to learn the art of animation or just for some laid back fun.

Now that you've read about them, head over to our 3DS homebrew section and download these fine homebrew apps and try them for yourself.
