It is one of the most common questions we get. Is there an R4 card for the 3DS? With so many different versions of the R4 DS cards since their original release, it's perfectly normaly to wonder if the old card you have will for on the 3DS, or if there is an updated version. The R4 cards have had updated models with each console release. From the original DS and DS lite, to the latest 3DS XL and 2DS XL systems.
The original R4 DS was released soon after the very first Nintendo DS system. Prior to that users were able to use Slot 2 cards with a PASS-ME card to load and store their DS files. While this worked, it wasn't perfect. It meant running the actual DS software from a GBA flashcart that would then use the PASS-ME card load the files. Thankfully the R4 DS made it much easier to load and store your DS files by being the first Slot 1 flashcart for the Nintendo DS and DS lite. There were other slot 1 cards that were released, but none of them offered the ease of use of the R4 DS. The R4 was one of the first cards to use readily available micro SD memory cards instead of built in memory.
With the release of the DSi and the DSi XL consoles, the original R4 DS cards were became incompatible. With that the R4i SDHC Cards were released. After a lot of testing and development, the R4i cards were the first cards to bring with them compatibily with the DSi and DSi XL systems.
And now we get to the 3DS, 3DS XL and the 2DS variants. We're happy to say that there is an R4 for the 3DS. In the form of the R4 3DS card.
