Gameboy And Game Boy Color Games On Your 3DS With The R4 3DS Card

We have covered the popular Lameboy Gameboy and Game boy Color emulator for the Nintendo 3DS before, and we still think that it is a good little emulator, though it could use some serious updates.  Today however we want to talk about a new emulator that lets you play Gameboy Color games on your Nintendo 3DS system.  Naturally it works with Gameboy games as well.  GameYob has however quickly become the best Gameboy Color emulator for the 3DS systems.  The developer of this emulator is serious about making sure it is compatible with as many games as possible, including new homebrew releases and freeware GB and GBC games.

Most true gamers and retro emulator users will tell you without a moments hesitation that GameYob is easily the very best GB / GBC emulator for the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL systems.  And we're not surprised.  The level of detail that has gone in to making this emulator is truly astounding.  Right down to the borders for the screen where your gameplay is shown, and either a Gameboy or Gameboy Color border, really give you the feel of playing your retro games on the actual hardware.

Its not just gamers that have taken a liking to GameYob.  Developers and coders are equally excited about this emulator because the author has decided to release it as open source, so that other devs and programmers can help with updates and to learn about how it works.

Once you run GameYob, the top screen will show the actual game you are playing and the lower screen on your 3DS gives you all of the options that the emulator has to offer, and there are a good number of them, to ensure that all of the games available are compatible.  This latest update has some new support built in even for the GB Printer, and it differentiates the settings for the Gameboy system emulation and Gameboy Color emulation.

Game compatibility in the latest version, which is currently 0.5, is excellent.  Games and apps run at full speed and play perfectly.  If you didn't know any better, you'd think you were playing the games right on the Gameboy or the Gameboy Color.  What we like the most here is the amazing auto save function, which allows you to save your game, even if the game itself does not offer a save spot in the game itself.

The changelog from the developer lists the following fixes, additions and changes to the newest 0.5 version of GameYob:

Version 0.5:
  • Added Gameboy Printer emulation
  • Added GBS playback feature
  • Added "scale" button
  • Semi-overhauled menu: now colorized, and does not interrupt emulation.
  • Improved Super Gameboy emulation
  • Selectable custom borders
  • Reduced autosaving lag (results may vary between flashcards and SD cards)
  • Implemented the halt bug (fixes The Smurfs)
  • Wram register has unused bits set (fixes Metal Gear Solid)
  • More fixes to emulation accuracy, sound, etc
  • Stability fixes (most notably for sleep mode), many other minor bugfixes

Our next news post will contact step by step directions on how to setup, use and play your favorite GB and GBC games on your Nintendo 3DS.   You will need an R4 3DS card in order to be able to use GameYob in your 3DS or 3DS XL... Nintendo 2DS owners, you can use the emulator as well.

Watch the video below for an idea of how GameYob performs.  Unfortunately the video is showing GameYob being played on a DS, with which it is 100% cimky.
