There's a lot of controversy around MicroSoft's new Xbox One system. It's going to be an always on system, requiring a constant internet connection in order to buy codes for your games, so that you can then play them on your consoles. Boy have things changed. One of the best things about console gaming is that it's a social thing. You take your new Call of Duty or WWE game to your friends house, and all of the guys sit around and play the new games you just bought. A recent update to how they plan to allow this feature, still leaves a whole lot to be desired. One of the things I've always done is traded games.. or lent out my games to friends to play for themselves. Often this included me getting a new game to try as well, in return for letting my buddy borrow one of my games. Initially it sounded like Microsoft wanted to do away with any game lending or borrowing. It's a damn shame if you ask me. Often times I ended up going out and buying the games I was borrowing if they were really that good. This puts the onus on the game developers to make really good games.

Update - Microsoft's Larry Hryb has issued the following correction to your friends not being able to play YOUR games. "Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.".

So the lending of games has been resolved. But how the heck can you play games by logging in to my account... or rather, how can *I* play my games, if my friend is already logged in to my account. This is truly where things get complicated... and a little bit more clarity would be so very good. I hate the idea of only being able to lend or borrow a game if I give out my Xbox Live password to someone else. And they'd have to do the same thing for me of course. Will they then have access to all of my content? All of my videos or pictures, etc??? It would be GREAT to get some real answers on this. So while you can "lend" a game... you really can't leave it there. You'll have to log out of your account on your friends Xbox, and bring the game back home with you. This sort of does away with the whole purpose or ease of borrowing or lending / trading games for a day or two.

And what about used games? I mean, I go out an buy a good number of new games regularly. Especially if they're games I've been waiting for or a sequel to an exisiting game I have. Or... just a really great new title. I also however spend a lot of time at my GameStop to check through their used game bins, and pick up some great games at some amazing bargains. It's only natural right? You played the game, grew tired of the game, and you want to now trade that game and use that money to go out and buy a NEW game. Not a used game, but a NEW game you've been waiting for. Will you be able to do this? The short answer is yet, the Xbox One will play used games, and you'll be able to play used games.

That's the short version though. The long answer is a little bit more tricky. Every single Xbox One game will have to be installed on to the internal hard drive. Either by downloading the game from Xbox Live, or going out and buying the disc itself (only to use the disc for installation... once installed, the disc is not used at all). This is great for gaming in one sense. You won't have to worry about swapping out discs when you want to play a new game. And you certainly won't have to worry about scratching or damaging your game disc itself either. We go back again to the lending of games. If you want to, for example, let your friend take your install disc, so that he can install the game on his Xbox One, to play it for a while, your friend will have to buy an unlock code, or pay an unlock code fee. This will be the ONLY way these games will play on his Xbox One, and his Xbox Live account.

This works the same for used games. Let's say you want to sell your game on ebay or kijiji. The person buying your game will then again have to pay a fee to unlock the game all over again. No word yet on how much this fee will be. It may be $10.00... It may be $40.00... We just don't know. But this does cause some complications too. You won't be able to set your own price for your own used games. You'll hand over the disc, and then whoever is buying the game, will have to pay an unlock fee to the publisher / developer or Microsoft themselves, in order to be able to play that game on their own Xbox One / Own Account. How do you, as the owner of the game, actually get the money for the game you're selling? You pretty much can't, as it will require a payment not to you - but to Xbox Live / the developer in order to then transfer that game over to another Xbox One.

Pretty strange all around if you ask me. We'll keep you posted here with any further updates.

We've covered the NeoGeo emulators for the DS and DSi in the past. This time though we're happy to show you a new video of the Nintendo 3DS playing NeoGeo Games, real, original, NeoGeo Games using an emulator for the R4 3DS card. Unlike the virtual console versions that are either stripped down or changed in some way to suit the console, the NeoGeo games you play using an emulator are all authentic and true to the original games. They use the original game files, and the game you load up an play will be no different than the game you played (or wished you could have played) back in the day on your NeoGeo MVS console. The NeoGeo truly brought the arcade eperience in to your living room. The games were identical to what you were able to play in your local arcade. Nothings was stripped down, no music or levels were taken out, everything was eactly as it would have been had you put your money into the arcade cabinet at yor local arcade. This is what set the NeoGeo apart from many of the other home game systems of the day. However, it also came with a hefty price tage. The console itself was twice the price of a Super NES, and the games were equallyexpensive at $200 or more per game in their peak days. The pricing didn't stop some real hard core gamers from going out and spending their hard earned cash on a true arcade experience right in their living room though. ANd with converters and adapters, customer were able to go out an buy the arcade versions of the cartridges themselvesm at a huge discount over what the home versions cost.

But boy have times changed. These days we have hand held gaming systems that have 3 or 4 times the power under the hood, when compared to the now old school NeoGeo MVS system. And with the help of Emulators like NeoDS, you can actually turn your 3DS console in to a full fledged NeoGeo home console, playing all of the orginal NeoGeo games, just as they were intended to be played.... except now you can carry them around in your pocket, and not have to lug your whole (and rather massive) NeoGeo system and the huge cartridges it had for games.

We've just covered the latest update to the classic Stella DS Atari 2600 emulator on our 3DS homebrew page. It's one of our favorite emulators ever. Not because it works the best, or has games with the most amazing graphics, but because the Atari 2600 holds a very special place in the hearts of almost all of us at the office. We grew up on old school 8-bit games, and the Atari 2600 was the undisputed king of all gaming systems when it was first released. It took a video game crash, and the Nintendo Entertainment system, in order to bring it down from its glory days. It truly was the first game system that brought all of the arcade games right in to your living room. While they were conversions - or ports as they're now called, they were good enough to keep you from having to visit the arcades. Games like PacMan, Mario Bros., Defender, Moon Patrol, and hundreds of others that were ported and released for the Atari 2600.

And now, thanks to Stella DS, and R4 3DS, and your Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL or DS, DS Lite or DSi system, you can now take all of your classic Atari 2600 games on the road with you. Play them whenever, wherever. Check out our Stella DS installation and setup guide.

We never cease to be amazed by some of the unique and wonderful homebrew games and applications that come from developers that make them, for no money, no real personal gain (The games and apps are always free) - but simply for the love of making something themselves, and then sharing it with the homebrew community. That's what makes the homebrew scene so fascinating.

Krystal DS (Renamed from the original name of Colors) is one of those games that again, that truly makes us appreciate the hard work that these developers put in to creating games. This game is a mix of a Tetris style game mixed in with the old Colums style game. You have to work to mix and match the colors from the falling tiles and match them up with what's already on the screen. As you match them, entire lines will disappear. While the premise may be simple, the truth is that these types of puzzle games are very addictive as well as have endless replay value.

Bearing in mind that this game is still in the Alpha stage, the game is very much a work in progress. However, we've been playing it here for a good 45 - 60 minutes, and it is a lot of fun. Not to mention that the game itself is free to download, play and of course, share with anyone that has an R4 3DS Card to use it with.

One of the most amazing features of the Nintendo 3DS system is it's ability to play some of our favorite classic games through the virtual console. Unfortunately, while the game selection is pretty decent, it lacks many of the cult favorites that people really like to play

Luckly, thats where the console emualtors come in to play. Rather than being limited to the meager selected of games in the virtual console, you can download NES and Gameboy emulators for your Nintendo 3DS that you can then use with one of our r4 3ds cards. If you have your own selection of games, or still have your old classic console library, then being able to replay some of these amazing classic games is what it's all about. And you won't be limited to the small selection available in the virtual console. The Lameboy DS emulators emulates and lets you play all of your favorite NES games on your Nintendo 3DS. And emulators like SnesDS and Neo Geo DS will let you get in to the 16 bit console action with even more games to play.

You can of course download these emulators from our r4 3ds homebrew section today, and be playing within 5-10 minutes. And we urge you to do so. If you're a huge fan of the classic games, and want to try explore even more by playing some of the very best homebrew games out there for these classic consoles, then getting the emulator for the system of your choice is the way to go!

It's not often that the homebrew and development community put up a red flag against any new udpates for the Nintendo 3DS systems. However, in the case of the newest v5.0.0-11 update, the homebrew development community advises completely against updating your consoles to the new system version. They don't make this recommendation lightly. Often times, these updates don't bring a whole lot more features to your console, but in the case of this new v5.0.0-11 Nintendo 3DS update, there are some features - namely being able to hack the system in the future through some open exploits. While this warning may very well be a temporary one - as the development community may end up finding new exploits... but as it stands right now, they advise against updating to this new 3ds v5.0.0-11 update.

Having siad that, our R4 3DS Dual Core card and many of our other cards work perfectly on the new Nintendo 3DS update. But below you'll find the quote from gbatemp.net

And we quote:

"The newest 3DS update 5.0.0-11 was released earlier this week. If you have any interest in the 3DBrew scene, then it is advised that you leave your firmware at 4.5.0-10. Even if your flashcard still works after the latest update, there are a number of internal vulnerabilities that have been patched, which could compromise the ability to run potential softmods. On-going discussion linked below."

Play your Snes on 3DS - Your Nintendo 3DS turned in to a portable SNES of sorts. if you're a fan of the good old games on the SNES, then you'll be extremely happy to know that Snes on 3DS is alive and well, and has received a recent update, bringing with it even more game compatibility and fast loading times. The Snes on 3DS app has been available for quite some time. In fact it was first released for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems. You need only an R4 3DS card and a desire to play some of the best 16 bit console games available.

There are only 2 different Snes emulators for the Nintendo DS, DSi and Nintendo 3DS. The same two emulators work on all of the systems. We're going to cover the one we use the most here, which is snemulds. It's a favorite because it offers faster gameplay playback and has a bit more compatibility with many of the great Snes Games. In this quick tutorial, we're going to cover how to setup and start using the emulator on your R4 3DS or R4i Gold card.

Once you have our firmware kernel loaded to your R4, all that's left to do is to simply install / copy over the emulator to the micro SD card. You can do this by downloading the emulator from our 3DS Homebrew section. Once you have it downloaded to your PC or MAC, you will want to put your micro SD card in to the USB Reader / Writer that came with your R4. Now, plug it in to the USB port on your computer and open up the new removeable drive on your computer. Find the snemulDS download you had saved earlier, and copy over the snemulDS .nds file to the micro SD card.

You'll now have to put some of your games on the micro SD card as well. As always, we suggest putting these games in their own folder, just for ease of access. Make a new folder on your microSD card and call is SNES GAMES or simply just SNES. Copy and paste over the games you have to this new folder, and you're all set.

All you have to do now is put aside some time and start retro gaming. Plug your micro SD Card back in to your R4 3DS, and put that card in to your DS, DSi or Nintendo 3DS. Once you power up and select the r4 menu, you'll be able to select SnemulDS as one of the files to load from the list of games and applications you have on your micro SD card. Once it starts, you simply have to go to the SNES folder we created, and select the game you want to play.

Take a look below for 100 Snes games in just 10 Minutes. This video shows off some of the very best games from that era. 16-bit console gaming was at an all time high when the Snes ruled the game world and brought with it some of the very best arcade conversions as well as movie based games, and some of the most unique games every created.
