Loading... Please wait...It looks like the homebrew just keeps coming for the Nintendo 3DS and DS / DSi systems. Today we have a game called Krystal DS. It's one we covered earlier this year when it was still in the beta or alpha stages of development. It's now beenupdated and close to completed, as it was entered in to a freeware / homebrew coding competition and has a pretty good chance of getting the top prize.
Krystal DS is a block / tetris type game. Similar in fact to the game Columns that made the Sega Genesis and Sega Game gear a big hit. You have to line up colored squares in sets of 3 in order to blow them up. And much like Tetris, you can't put the game down.
The object of the game is very much like the old Columns game, you have to line up or create groups of 3 (or more of course) gems of the same color, in any direction possible on the game screen. The more stones you can remove at the same time with any given color will earn you more points and will get you combo bonuses.
The end of the game comes at level 25. You have to get as many points as possible before you reach the end of the game and get to the last level. Once you've hit level 25 you will be presented with your total score, and you'll get bonus points for the number of combos you were able to get, and the level you finished up to.
If you want to maximize your score, you can use the special gems to make better combos. The diamond shaped gems for example allow you to change the color of the other gems they touch. If however a diamond shaped gem touched the ground, or the bottom of the play area, then all of the different gems will change to a random color.

White gems also give you an opportunity to clear more gems. When a white gem touches a red gem, all gems of the same color (red in this case) will be eliminated from the screen.
It's always tremendously refreshing to see freeware games come out for the DS and Nintendo 3DS that make playing homebrew so much fun. Check out the gameplay video below for a good look at just how good this 3DS homebrew game is. And it's just one of hundreds of freeware games and applications you can play on your Nintendo 3DS with the R4 3DS cards. And you can download the game from our 3DS homebrew section or the developer site.
