Play MSX Homebrew Games On Your Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS System

The MSX personal computer was a giant success in Asia.  It was the very first multi manufacturer computer that ran the same software as any other MSX computer on the market, allowing games to work on your computer whether you had a Sony, a Panasonic or any other brand or make of the MSX.  Something we windows users have now grown accustomed to, but this was something that was completely new back in the late eighties and nineties.

It had someone the best games for its time.  The graphics were often leaps ahead of most other competing computer and video game systems, and a lot of the big franchises we came to love on the Playstation, PS2 and other home consoles all got their start in the MSX and MSX 2 personal computers.

There is a fairly large indie / homebrew scene for the MSX, even today, decades after its heyday has come and gone.  And with a yearly development competition, it's certainly a great way to get some pretty amazing freeware games and apps that are released regularly for the MSX.

We have covered our favourite MSX and MSX 2 emulator before, msxDS is the emulator of choice to play MSX games on your Nintendo DS, DSi and Nintendo 3DS, and we have it available for download in our 3DS homebrew section.  What we want to talk about now are some of the really neat freeware / indie / homebrew games.  Many people may not realize that as mentioned, there is a very large following for the MSX, even decades after release.

MSXDev 2013 has already brought some of the best developers in the MSX homebrew scene back to the front lines to make some new amazing games, all of them free of course, for all of the MSX owners out there to enjoy.  And naturally, with MSXDS, you can enjoy these very same games on your Nintendo DS, DSi, Nintendo 3DS / 3DS XL and the new Nintendo 2DS systems.

Shouganai (MSX Homebrew)

We're going to showcase more of the amazing MSX homebrew in the coming weeks and months... After all, these are all free games that you can add to your collection and increase your gae library.  But for now, take a look at the very impressive winner of the MSXDev 2013 coding competiton.  Shouganai (しょうがない) by Paxanga Soft. This quirky release features a gameplay-mix of the arcade classic Qix and the mobile phone's fabled Snake. Tasking you with the challenge of stretching out to grab objects from an arena whilst enemies roam free isn't easy, but it sure is addictive.
